Birchmore Trail Partial Closure -- Beginning November 27, 2017 Facility 127 | Updated 8:00 AM January 4, 2018 | Posted: 9:00 AM, November 22, 2017 Construction work to replace one of the pedestrian bridges on Memorial Park’s Birchmore Trail will begin Monday, November 27, 2017 and is expected to take about 8 weeks. During this time, there will be no access to the small highlighted section of trail (see map). The majority of the Birchmore trail system will remain unaffected by this closure.
Among other issues, FY17 bridge and boardwalk inspections noted that the existing bridge is being routinely over topped by flood waters indicating inadequate clearance of the channel and leading to scour which was undermining the bridge foundations. The new bridge will be longer and placed at a higher elevation so as to reduce the likelihood of flood damage during storm events and to allow the creek to more naturally shift. Please check back here for more updates as we continue progressing with this project.
